Design Thinking x Emerging Technology Applications, Opening an Innovative Path for Machinery Industry Transformation

Edited by | Design R&D Section Chief Jill Chen, Researcher Wan Jiang, Researcher  Yi-Hsuan Kuo

The development of Industry 5.0 and the rise of emerging technologies are profoundly affecting the operational models and market ecologies of the manufacturing industry. In the face of rapid technological progress and changing economic patterns, Taiwan's machinery industry is also facing these transformations, beginning to readjust operational strategies and positioning to consolidate industrial competitiveness. Traditional machinery operators previously focused heavily on production efficiency and technical breakthroughs. However, today's market demands place technology as a cornerstone while emphasizing the development of flexible commercial operational strategies, diversified customer service experiences, and innovative product usage values, allowing the upstream and downstream of the industry to establish a demand-and-supply relationship for sustainable development.

In this wave of transformation, design-driven innovation and technology-driven innovation complement each other, becoming an important strategy to drive industrial growth. Design Thinking is a non-linear innovation process that encompasses inspiration exploration, ideating innovation opportunities, and implementation execution, driving R&D and innovation through a human-centered approach (Santos & Brandão, 2022).

Design methodologies can maintain flexible and iterative characteristics, enabling enterprises to react quickly even in highly competitive environments (The Design Thinking Association). They redefine problems from key operational scenarios and discover innovation possibilities—whether enhancing production efficiency, strengthening product value, improving consumer experience, or optimizing supply chain interactions—to establish smoother service touchpoints and exchange views with cross-disciplinary experts (such as industrial associations, designers, and technical experts), thereby bringing deeper market insights to find appropriate solutions and overcome operational challenges.

This book will provide an in-depth analysis of industry trends and technology applications through four major chapters, assisting the machinery industry in exploring innovation opportunities from multiple perspectives and viewpoints through design innovation models and practical cases:

  1. Analyzing the current status and digital transformation trends of Taiwan's machinery industry, and exploring the role of design in innovative transformation.

  2. An in-depth analysis of application opportunities for emerging technologies within the machinery industry, exploring the possibilities of digital reality technologies, sustainable manufacturing, and cross-domain integration through practical cases and expert viewpoints.

  3. Explaining how design is introduced into the machinery industry to enhance the market competitiveness of machinery equipment and software products, covering design thinking workshops, interactive experience design, to UI/UX optimization.

  4. Providing directional recommendations for innovative applications in the machinery industry, combining design and technology integration strategies to promote new models of smart machinery and digital transformation.
